Murder suspect captured after weeklong hunt in deadly Bridgeport road rage case
A man accused of killing a Bridgeport driver in what police believe was a road rage shooting has been arrested one week after the deadly encounter.
Police say 57-year-old Jorge Luis Ortiz was taken into custody Sunday night on the city's East Side after officers spotted him walking in the area. Investigators say Ortiz ran from an officer but was quickly apprehended.
Ortiz was wanted on charges including murder and criminal possession of a firearm in connection with the Oct. 12 shooting death of 48-year-old Nelson Manuel Batista.
Authorities say Batista was found lying in the street next to his vehicle near Park Avenue and Cottage Street around 9 a.m. suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to St. Vincent's Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Detectives and patrol officers had been searching for Ortiz for several days before his arrest. Police say he was not carrying a firearm when he was taken into custody.
Ortiz was scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning in Bridgeport Superior Court. His bond was set at $2.5 million.
Police believe the shooting stemmed from a road rage incident.
Batista's visitation/wake is scheduled for tonight and the funeral is Tuesday morning.
