FDNY launches task force to tackle 'historic' increase in brush fires
17h agoA fire in Newark Friday evening left dozens displaced, and firefighters injured.
The fire took place on Seymour Avenue.
Officials say the fire started at an abandoned home and spread to the homes next door.
Everyone who was inside the homes made it out safely, but the fire captain and three firefighters were sent to University Hospital when one of the buildings collapsed.
Police say 14 families, including 19 adults and 11 children, have been displaced.
The fire captain suffered face and back injuries, he is reportedly in stable condition and remains hospitalized. The others have been released.
Right now, the Red Cross says they are helping 30 people who were forced from their homes.
The fire has made these three homes uninhabitable, and they will have to come down at some point.
The timeline for demolition is still uncertain. News 12 is waiting to hear from officials.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
