Officials broke ground on a new affordable apartment complex in Mount Vernon on Tuesday.
The 315-unit housing development is called Opal 115.
It will be located minutes away from the Mount Vernon West train station.
The project is estimated to cost $223 million to develop with hopes of attracting working families and boosting the local economy.
"The mayor of the city of Mount Vernon wants to activate this neighborhood for future economic development," said Steven Horton of Grandview Consulting Group. "This [site] was in [the] warehouse district that the mayor wants to take advantage of its proximity to the Mount Vernon West train station to use for future development."
Officials said construction for the complex is expected to take around 37 months.
