The Mount Vernon City Council has approved a $151.4 million budget for next year, which includes a 3.5% tax hike.
The council voted 4-0 in favor of the budget during a special meeting.
Although residents are not happy about the tax increase, the council reduced the original proposed hike and plans to work on reducing it further next year.
Mount Vernon City Council President Cathlin Gleason emphasized the importance of economic development in offsetting the tax burden.
Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard also expressed the city's focus on business development to stabilize tax revenues over the next decade.
