A Bronx kindergartner with special needs had a traumatizing first day at school after his mom says he was bitten by another student four times.
The 5-year-old’s mother, Carolina Colón, spoke exclusively with News 12 on Monday.
"It's been very hard,” Colón said. “He doesn't let anyone touch his back right now. You can see the teeth marks; it looks black and blue."
Colón says her 5-year-old son Jaxon was excited to start kindergarten at the Bronx School for Continuous Learners last Wednesday, but just hours after drop-off, she got a call that sent her into a panic.
"All you could hear is my son screaming in the background,” Colón recalled. “At first they only told me that he was bit twice but when I looked at his body, he was bit four times, three in his back, one on his arm."
Jaxon has autism and is non-verbal. He's in a 6:1:1 classroom — six students to one teacher and one paraprofessional. His mom says that makes what happened even more unacceptable.
"I believe that they failed him,” the mother said. “They weren't watching him. Lack of supervision, negligence."
Colón said she pulled her son out of the school right away. She was able to get him a safety transfer and Monday was his first day at his new school.
"My heart hurts still and I just hope he has a great day,” said Colón.
Colón believes the Bedford Park school failed her son.
"I believe we need to do better,” she said. “The DOE needs to do better and provide people that are better equipped in providing these services for those kids and make sure that there's a better lack of supervision."
News 12 reached out to the principal, she said the school had no comment.
News 12 also reached out to the NYC Department of Education and was told it is looking into it.
