Former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg is in New Jersey today, weighing in on the debate over the Gateway Tunnel project.
Earlier this month, President Donald Trump said he was terminating the $16 billion plan to build a new rail tunnel connecting New Jersey to New York.
Buttigieg says Trump admitted he blocked the project "out of spite," not because it was a bad idea or waste of money.
"He didn't say it was a bad idea or that New Jersey didn't need it," Buttigieg said. "He openly admitted he stopped this project because he doesn't like Chuck Schumer. It's straight-up mob boss politics."
Buttigieg appeared alongside Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mikie Sherrill, who is campaigning today in Ocean and Morris counties.
Her opponent, Republican Jack Ciattarelli, is holding rallies in Ocean and Monmouth counties.
News 12 reached out to Ciattarelli for comment on Buttigieg's appearance with Sherrill.
