The man who was sentenced for attacking a state representative outside of the XL Center in Hartford in 2023 was found unresponsive in his cell at Garner Correctional Institution in Newtown, officials say.

Andrey Desmond was discovered at 6:45 a.m., the Department of Corrections says.

Desmond was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The Office of the Chief Medical Exam says an autopsy was performed on Tuesday but they are awaiting results.

Desmond was serving a five-year sentence for assaulting state Rep. Maryam Khan following a Muslim prayer service celebrating the Eid al-Adha holiday.
