Stabbing inside Gowanus supportive housing building sparks safety concerns
A man is recovering after a stabbing late Tuesday night inside a supportive housing building in Gowanus — and now some residents say they’re afraid to keep living there.
Investigators say it happened just before 11:35 p.m. inside the building on Sackett Street.
A police source tells News 12 a fight broke out between two residents before the 32-year-old man was stabbed in the face, neck and chest. He was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital and is expected to be OK.
Video from the scene shows emergency crews crowding the block overnight as sirens echoed through the neighborhood.
As investigators continued searching for the person responsible Wednesday morning, several residents living inside the building told News 12 they believe violence inside and around the facility has become a growing problem.
One resident, Keith Truxlerbey, said he no longer feels safe staying there.
“I'm going back to the trains today… I'm safer,” he told News 12.
Truxlerbey claimed people living in the building have repeatedly raised concerns about fights and threats.
“That stabbing was gonna happen,” he said. “Because they're not doing nothing when they're hearing somebody is pulling razors and pulling knives out.”
Another resident, who identified himself as Heavy, said he recently got into a fight inside the building himself and woke up shaken after hearing about the stabbing.
“I woke up this morning a little traumatized,” he said. “That could have been me.”
A police source says the person who ran off after the stabbing was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.
