The Virginia man convicted in the fatal shooting of a Sayreville councilwoman was sentenced to life in prison on Monday.
Rashid Bynum, 31, was found guilty in June of shooting Eunice Dwumfour multiple times while she sat inside her vehicle in front of her Sayreville apartment building.
Bynum stood before the court inside the Middlesex County Courthouse as Judge Joseph Paone said that due to the horrific nature of the crime, the premeditation, the risk of Bynum doing something similar in the future and the lack of remorse, he was compelled to dole out the life sentence.
Bynum chose not to speak, so it's still not clear why Dwumfour was targeted.
In June, a jury found him guilty of shooting and killing Dwumfour outside of her home two years ago.
The murder weapon, a Glock 19, was found with Bynum’s DNA.
The investigation revealed that Bynum rented a car, went to a gun shop to buy bullets and then drove to Sayreville from Virginia to shoot and kill Dwumfour.
During sentencing on Monday, Bynum was forced to sit and listen to Dwumfour's family as they spoke during the victim impact portion.
“Honestly, I can’t say I forgive you or will be able to forgive you because you won’t admit what you did and why. But the why would never justify what you did,” said Dwumfour’s sister, Priscilla Dwumfour.
“She was the gem of the family. She brightened every corner that she found herself in because everywhere she went, she was doing good. That was our Eunice," said Dwumfour’s uncle, Foster Dixon.
The defense tried to get a lesser sentence by suggesting Bynum might have a mental health issue - one that should be considered before sentencing - but Judge Paone disagreed.
The defense plans to file an appeal of the verdict.
