Police say that a man is in critical condition and a source says he had to have his leg amputated after an incident in Pelham Bay.
Surveillance video obtained by News 12 shows a car parked outside a Chinese restaurant, near the corner of Wilkinson and Westchester avenues.
Video shows a person appear to get in it and then a man come running out of the restaurant. The car is then seen driving off with him still hanging on to the driver's side door.
A few seconds later, another angle shows the car going up Wilkinson Avenue, with the man still hanging off of it, and neighbors say they heard a crash.
"One of our patients walked in, she looked really shocked, kind of in a weird state, so we asked her what happened," said Gonzalo Corridori, who works across the street from the crash.
People in the area say they were told the driver purposely swiped a parked car, knocking the man off, and leaving him covered in blood.
"The guy's leg was nearly severed, looked really in bad shape, and the guy had some kind of head injury - just didn't look good like the guy was going to make it," said Corridori.
Police were apparently able to track down the car, with a source confirming to News 12 it was the same vehicle our cameras found empty on the side of the Hutchinson Parkway, right next to the Pelham Parkway exit, and just over a quarter mile away from where it all started.
Corridori called the incident "pretty shocking," since "this tends area tends to be a pretty good area."
"I've been here five years, and this is the first instance I've ever seen of something happening like this," agreed Scott Kilgore, who lives down the street.
But others said both on and off camera that this does seem to be a growing trend.
"Last year, my uncle was almost carjacked around the corner," Corridori said. "So it seems like there's more crime happening in this area than in the past."
