The alleged Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann is expected to plead guilty in court Wednesday to a string of murders that have haunted Long Island for more than a decade and admit responsibility for an eighth death, sources say.
Sources tell News 12 Heuermann is expected to admit to killing Karen Vergata.
Vergata's legs were found in a plastic bag on Fire Island after her disappearance in 1996. Her skull was found 15 years later west of Tobay Beach.
The Massapequa Park resident and Manhattan architect is expected to admit to the slayings of seven women at a Suffolk County Supreme Court hearing scheduled for April 8 in Riverhead, according to sources.
The terms of the plea agreement are not yet known, but there has been talk of a potential agreement for months.
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney has declined to confirm whether a plea agreement has been reached.
Tierney will speak after the expected plea along with other law enforcement officials.
“We’ll see what happens on April 8,” Tierney said on March 27 when asked about the possibility of a guilty plea. He also would not comment on whether prosecutors have offered Heuermann a deal, reiterating only that the court date is approaching quickly.
Heuermann was arrested in July 2023 in connection with a series of killings that shocked Long Island. Prosecutors allege he murdered seven women between 1993 and 2010 and disposed of their remains along Gilgo Beach and in other areas of Suffolk County’s East End.
Heuermann has maintained his innocence since his arrest. His defense team spent months attempting to suppress key evidence, including DNA that prosecutors say was recovered from a discarded pizza crust and links him to several of the victims. Those efforts were unsuccessful.
A trial is currently scheduled to begin shortly after Labor Day, and Tierney has previously said his office is prepared to proceed if the case does not resolve before then.
