A man who was shot beside his vehicle in Bridgeport Monday morning has died, according to the Bridgeport Police Department.

Officers responded to the area of Park Avenue and Cottage Street around 9 a.m. and found 48-year-old Nelson Manuel Batista, of Bridgeport, lying in the street next to his car.

Batista was taken to St. Vincent's Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

The intersection was closed for about two hours as the Major Crimes Unit processed the scene.

Police say Batista's death is the eighth homicide reported in Bridgeport this year.
