Hasseem Jenkins appeared shocked when he heard the jury say he had been found guilty Wednesday afternoon.
They found him guilty on five charges: murder, manslaughter, robbery, burglary and criminal possession of a weapon.
This verdict did not come easily for the jury. It took them four days to deliberate.
“I think the jury was focusing in on the crux of our defense, and that is my client had no intent to commit the crime because he was involuntarily drugged," said defense lawyer Angelo MacDonald.
In May 2024, social worker Maria Coto was going to see a client when she knocked on the wrong apartment door.
Jenkins answered and started attacking Coto, who tried to run to a nearby apartment for safety.
Coto was taken to the hospital, where she later died just over a month later, on June 19.
“It’s been terrible for us," said Maria Gutierrez, Maria's aunt.
News 12 spoke with Coto's family after the verdict. They said that they feel at peace with this, and they hope that it can all finally be over.
“I think my niece is happy in heaven, thanking everybody because this has been a long time to come," explained Gutierrez.
"I am grateful to the jury for holding the defendant responsible for killing Maria. My office will continue to support Maria's family and all crime victim in Westchester County," said Westchester County District Attorney Susan Cacace in a written statement.
CSEA, the union representing Westchester County employees, also responded to the verdict. It reads in part, "Nothing will ever make up for the tragic loss of Maria Coto, but we are grateful her loved ones and coworkers are finally seeing justice served," said CSEA President Mary E. Sullivan.
MacDonald says that he will be filing a motion to see if the judge will overturn the verdict of the jury.
Jenkins will be back in court for his sentencing hearing on Dec. 11.
