A man died after becoming unresponsive while in police custody following a violent disturbance inside an apartment Tuesday night in Yonkers.
Yonkers police say they received a 911 call around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday about a violent attack at an apartment on 165 Bruce Ave.
Officers arrived to find a man attacking two people. They used a Taser twice to try to subdue him, but it was ineffective both times.
Police say the officers were finally able to handcuff the man without using physical strikes or weapons, but shortly after he became unresponsive. The suspect, whose name has not been released, was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead.
Witnesses told police the man had been using drugs with a friend before becoming violent. The two victims suffered significant injuries including bite wounds, lacerations from a sharp object, and blunt force trauma inflicted with a frying pan and a metal stovetop grate.
Investigators are reviewing witness and victim statements as well as police body camera footage. An autopsy is being performed on the suspect along with toxicology tests. Police say examinations show the suspect suffered from several significant medical conditions and at this time there is no indication that the Taser deployment or any actions taken by the officers caused his death.
