One man is now behind bars after a stabbing in Mott Haven left fourteen-year-old Caleb Rios dead as he left home to walk to school. Today, the suspect was arrested and charged with murder. They also believe he's responsible for another stabbing earlier this month. Those who knew the teen spoke with News Twel's Tim Harfman as police say the attack was unprovoked. 29 year old Waldo Mejia walked out of the 40th police precinct in handcuffed Saturday with a response to news reporters too explicit to air on TV. Police say the Bronx man is responsible for Friday's fatal stabbing of 14-year-old Kayla Brios near East. 138th Street and Third Avenue in Mott Haven we're told the teen was on his way to school when he was stabbed twice in the chest. The Bronx DA calling it a senseless, unprovoked attack. You know, he called his father and told his father that he couldn't breathe and that he was scared. And his father heard him dying. This murder is a singular, it's unfathomable to think about the level of this tragedy. The NYPD says Mejia is a career criminal with a history of mental illness. We do not have a system that puts the rights and needs of victims first. And my message to New Yorkers is something has to give. Neighbors and former classmates are placing flowers and candles in the lobby of Caleb's building. I was devastated. would have never thought it would be him because he was such a good kid. He didn't get in no trouble, out of all the people like him because he was, he wasn't like he wasn't a bad kid. We're told Caleb was a football and basketball player and loved math. Those who knew him describe him as quiet and caring. What they did to poor Caleb was not right. Whatsoever Police say the 29-year-old has several prior arrests, and they believe he's also responsible for another stabbing in the Bronx back on January 5th in Mott Haven. Tonight for the first time we're hearing from the family of a 14 year old boy who was fatally stabbed last week while on his way to school in Mott Haven. News 12's Tim Harfman spoke with them as they fight for justice. He was my first grandson, and you know, he meant everything to me. An emotional grandmother devastated over losing her grandson, who died last week after police say he was stabbed twice in the chest. Even though he was 14 years old, he still was a little kid with heavy hearts and tears flowing through tonight's frigid temperatures, loved ones and community members chanted through the streets demanding justice. for Caleb. Police say Caleb Brios was on his way to school when 29-year-old Waldo Mejia approached the teen with a knife and pierced him in the heart and lungs. Mejia was arrested and charged, and police say he has a lengthy criminal background and mental health illness. I hate you and I hope you. Caleb's aunts calling for stricter laws. I feel like the justice system failed him because this. should have never been on the streets after repeated offenses. I think that the city failed us 100%. Taking their fight to the streets, hoping to stop the violence. Today's us. Tomorrow could be anybody else. Family and friends tell us they'll continue to organize events to honor Caleb and demand justice, including a memorial basketball fundraiser this Friday in Mott Haven. Well, we're learning new disturbing details tonight about the man accused of killing that Mott Haven teenager who again was simply walking to school. The suspected murderer has a history of violent criminal behavior, and as News Twelve's Edward Robinson reports, neighbors wonder why he was on the streets in the first place. This chilling video shows Waldo Mejia caught on his neighbor's ring cam just two months ago, repeatedly hacking away at it until it was left like this. So he'd be doing the, the, the, the bell. Now he knocking it. I say, oh my God, 3 o'clock in the morning, 2 o'clock in the morning. His neighbor says it all escalated after he simply asked him to stop ringing his bell. This video shows Mejia trying to remove. Moved the camera before returning with that knife. Mejia was later arrested and released after pleading not guilty. Neighbors here were startled to see him again. The lady he had 2 in the 38, she got nervous too, and the guy and me too and everybody. I feel bad, man. I feel so bad about what happened. Then just Friday, police say Mejia brutally stabbed 14 year old. Caleb Rehos on Alexander Avenue as the teen was innocently walking to school. Officers arrested him nearby, still holding the bloody knife. Records show Mejia has a long history of violence. In 2017, he was arrested for carrying a loaded 9 millimeter gun, and in 2019, he was charged with arson after setting fire to a Bronx apartment building. My issue happened. In November 27th, right? See, the guy in jail, that that case right now is alive. Now, according to the Bronx DA's office, Mejia pleaded guilty to reduced charges in several of these cases and was sentenced to time served, then released back to the neighborhood. Neighbors are relieved he's finally off the streets. The good thing with the. Have that guy ready. That's a good thing. I, I feel better because of that. And Mejia is now charged with murder, manslaughter, and possession of a weapon. Police are also investigating his connection to another stabbing in Mott Haven. Eric Robinson, News 2 of the Bronx.
