A 25-year-old man has been charged after police say he stole a gold necklace from Kay Jewelers in the Town of Newburgh.
According to police, the theft happened around 7 p.m. Tuesday at the jewelry store located at 1221 Route 300.
Investigators say the suspect entered the store and asked an employee to see a gold chain. When the employee removed the necklace from a display case, police say the suspect grabbed it from the top of the case and ran out of the store toward Route 300.
Detectives identified the suspect as 25-year-old Kwasi Oronde.
Police say their investigation led them to a home in the Town of Poughkeepsie, where the stolen necklace was recovered, and Oronde was taken into custody.
Oronde was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny.
“It’s horrible that stuff like that happens here, especially in the outskirts of the city. Sign of the times, I guess. Hopefully, state police and Newburgh police can stay on top of it,” said Andy Judge of Beacon, who was shopping in the area.
Police say Oronde was released with an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in Town of Newburgh Court next month.
News 12 has reached out to Kay Jewelers’ parent company, Signet Jewelers, for comment.
