A worker was trapped inside an excavator after a large piece of heavy equipment fell onto it at a Bridgeport work site Thursday.

Bridgeport police and firefighters responded to 1 Atlantic St. for reports of a person trapped in the excavator.

Officials said the accident happened when a large piece of equipment fell onto the excavator, trapping the worker inside.

Fairfield firefighters also responded with their heavy rescue squad to assist with the operation.

Officials said extrication efforts were underway, and the trapped worker was conscious and alert.
