We continue to follow breaking news tonight of a shooting at a schoolyard in Morrisania that left a 16 year old girl dead while she was riding her scooter. Police giving us more details tonight as the girl's family spoke out for the first time, and we're learning that a 14 year old boy is now in police custody for this deadly shooting. Police do say it was gang related and the victim was not the intended target. News Twelve's Tim Harfman is in Morrisania with what we're learning tonight, Tim. Well, Amanda, about 24 hours ago this area outside the Bronx Latin School was packed with police after they say 16-year-old Yvette Jeffrey was shot in the head. The community is gathering tonight for a balloon release, all while her grandmother's demanding justice. It was just banging And when I opened the door, they said she got shot, she got shot in the head and A moment changing this family forever. Police say Yvette Jeffrey was shot by a stray bullet Monday while she was out riding her scooter. She's Yvette's grandmother says she was an only child. The teenager was bright with dreams of going to college and becoming a medical technician. She says Yvette was like any other teen girl. You name it. Police say a 14-year-old boy fired the gun that killed a vet, and it was gang related. He does have interaction with the NYPD in the past. We're told a vet was an innocent bystander taking cover behind a brick wall when she was shot, a vet's grandmother showing no mercy. No. I hold your family responsible. She's speaking out directly to the shooter. You took her away from us. You took away from me. Again, a 14-year-old boy is in custody. Police have not released his name because of his age. A not guilty plea from the 14 year old boy accused of killing a sixteen-year-old girl in a schoolyard shooting. That boy, who cannot be identified due to his age, appeared in court virtually from his hospital bed, and tonight he's being held in custody on charges that include murder. Newsub's Heather Fordham spoke with the victim's family as the community is now stepping in. To call for an end to this senseless violence, the comfort of a hug cannot ease this mother's pain. My daughter is, she's very distraught and my family is hurting them, but you know, everybody is losing. Losing just like he killed her and he lost his life now too, so Ferdinand Abad lost his 16-year-old granddaughter Yvette Jeffrey on Monday. She was hit in the head by a stray bullet during a fight in a schoolyard at Bronx Latin. Yvette's last moments captured on camera as she rode her scooter past the 14-year-old student who would be handed the gun that took her life seconds later. That he'd been at the house and hanging out with us. You know the family. Yeah, yeah, he was. I don't know what happened today. Anti-gun violence activists replaced crime scene investigators outside of the school. Save Our Streets, also known as SOS, does daily outreach to kids in this neighborhood. It's not normal. It's not normal for nobody to get shot. It's not normal for young kids to have guns. The shooting because young kids can't just go get the guns. So that's a whole other question for a whole another, but a young girl lost her life. Jeffrey is one of 2018 under 18 years old that have been shot this year in the Bronx. In the same age range, shootings have jumped more than 200% since 2018 in the borough. I'm not mad at him, you know, everybody's mad. I just wanted to stop, you know, killing. It's like kids killing kids. There was at least a dozen officers outside the school complex here today during dismissal. There were also officers at Morris High School where Yvette was a student. Her family is now getting ready to plan her funeral this weekend in Morrisania, Heather Fordham, News 12, the Bronx.

Continue to follow the tragedy out of Morrisania tonight where a 16 year old girl was shot and killed in a schoolyard yesterday afternoon. Now new video shows the fight that happened right before that shooting broke out, and tonight loved ones gathered for a vigil to remember that 16 year old Bronx girl as a fourteen-year-old boy is now being charged with her murder. News's Tim Harfman spoke with the victim's mother and has more on the investigation. You don't expect your child to be gone, you know, it's just really messed up. A mother mourning the loss of her only child, 16-year-old Yvette Jeffrey, after police say the teen was fatally struck by a stray bullet Monday. Kristen Aba tells us she saw her daughter just hours before she died. I told her I love her and to have a good day out with her boyfriend, you know, for her anniversary and everything, and that was it. She left and we didn't hear from her again. The mother says Yvette made it to her anniversary dinner, but not to the movies. Instead, the victim wound up in this schoolyard at Bronx Latin School, where a brawl broke out. Police say this was gang related and started as a fist fight. You see a vet in the white dress riding a scooter. Police say the girl was an innocent bystander when a 14-year-old boy shot a pistol 3 times. One of those bullets striking a vet in the head. It gets worse every day, every minute. I'm just thinking about her, the mother thinking about this video of her daughter. Watch her over and over again all night. And how the two spent Mother's Day eating chocolate strawberries together. Now as she holds a vigil Tuesday evening. Says she will never forgive her daughter's killer. He hurt my baby. No, I don't. I'm sorry. I don't. Police have not released that 14-year-old boy's name due to his age, but we're told he's charged with murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon at Bronx Criminal Court.
