If you’re hitting the road this Labor Day weekend, be prepared to pay more to get there.

Gas prices on Long Island are now averaging $4.27 a gallon for regular, more than $1 higher than they were this same day last year.

That jump at the pump could mean spending significantly more just to fill up and get to your destination and for Long Island drivers, the difference becomes even clearer when you look at a typical 15-gallon tank.

At last year’s average price of $3.17 a gallon, filling a 15-gallon tank would have cost about $47.55. At today’s average of $4.27, that same fill-up would cost about $64.05. That’s an extra $16.50 for one tank of gas.

For drivers traveling several hours this holiday weekend, that cost could add up even more if they need to stop for gas more than once.

Nationally, this Labor Day weekend is also on track to set a record at the pump. The national average has never been above $4 per gallon on Labor Day.

Drivers heading out for the holiday weekend can save money by comparing prices before filling up, since gas prices can vary from one station to another.
