A 24-year-old Long Branch man has been charged with vehicular homicide in connection with a May crash on the Garden State Parkway that killed a 27-year-old woman, authorities announced Thursday.
Kelvin Gomez-Fuentes faces a vehicular homicide charge in the May 17 crash that killed Katherine Andrade-Portillo, also of Long Branch, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office.
New Jersey State Police responded shortly before 4 a.m. to the Garden State Parkway's southbound express lanes near milepost 108, where a Toyota Tacoma driven by Gomez-Fuentes had crashed.
Investigators determined that Gomez-Fuentes was driving under the influence of intoxicating substances when his vehicle left the roadway, struck multiple objects, overturned and caught fire, prosecutors said.
Andrade-Portillo suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Gomez-Fuentes had previously been charged with several motor vehicle offenses, including driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, careless driving and possession of an unsealed container of cannabis.
Prosecutors said Gomez-Fuentes was charged with vehicular homicide earlier this week and surrendered to authorities at the New Jersey State Police barracks in Holmdel.
He was taken to the Monmouth County Correctional Institution pending an appearance in Superior Court.
