A local resource center is helping migrants from Latin America by offering English classes, cultural activities, cooking lessons and more.
The services at the Mexican Coalition are aimed at helping migrants build a life in New York City.
Jairo Guzman, president of the Mexican Coalition, emphasizes the importance of the center.
“Many of these families are coming to us in immediate crisis,” he said.
However, with the surge of migrants entering the city since 2022, centers like this are struggling to meet the growing demand.
Manuel Castro, commissioner of the NYC Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, stresses the need for community support.
He says these centers provide “the social space that people need to get to know their rights and responsibilities.”
Despite their efforts, Guzman believes more resources are needed to support families across the city.
The Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs says it oversees 100 centers citywide that are dedicated to supporting immigrant New Yorkers.
