The New York Red Bulls defeated Inter Miami 2-0 Saturday night at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, but for many fans, the final score was secondary to seeing one of soccer's biggest stars take the field.
Fans sporting Lionel Messi jerseys, posters and memorabilia filled the stadium hours before kickoff, eager for a chance to watch Messi play in person.
"We specifically bought the tickets to see Messi," said one fan.
Messi announced his retirement from international soccer after this year's World Cup.
He's still finishing up his season in U.S. Major League Soccer with Inter Miami, but Saturday night was Miami's last scheduled game with the New York Red Bulls.
"I'm ready to see Messi come off the bench and score a hat trick," said a fan who traveled from Connecticut for the game. "I'm very proud of him because he accomplished everything he needed to accomplish."
Messi remained on the bench until the second half, which prompted a loud ovation when he entered the match.
"I'm excited for when he does play, but the atmosphere has been insane," said another long-time Messi supporter. "It's a sold-out game."
Despite the anticipation, Inter Miami could not overcome the Red Bulls' advantage. New York added a second goal late in the match to secure the victory as fans erupted in celebration.
While Messi has not announced any plans regarding the end of his MLS career, many supporters said they were grateful simply to see him play in person, especially if it ends up being one of their last opportunities in New Jersey.
"He paved the way for all these players to be who they are and what they can do in the game," one fan said. "Amazing player, amazing to watch."
