A Lindenhurst day care employee is facing assault and child endangerment charges for injuring an 18-month-old girl, according to Suffolk police. Authorities say Megan Marchena, 26, pushed the girl’s face into a cot at Tutor Time Child Care and Learning Center on Feb. 24. The child was hospitalized and had to receive stitches. Another employee, Raven Griffin, says she saw the toddler being pushed back onto the cot. She says it happened on Monday, after the girl kept getting up during her nap. "The last time she slammed her down, the little girl hit her mouth on the cot. After she hit her mouth, she started crying," Griffin said. Griffin added that she rushed over to check on the little girl. "There was blood gushing all down her chin out of her mouth," she said. Child Protective Services was informed about the incident on Feb. 28 and launched an investigation. Suffolk detectives arrested Marchena that same day.
The Massapequa woman was arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip. Jackie Verdolino, a parent who brings her 5-year-old to Tutor Time, said the arrest makes parents “incredibly angry.” “We don't know what else is going on in that school,” she said. Marchena's lawyer Chase Brown sent News 12 a statement: "My client is, at this point, is given every presumption of innocence. There is certainly a lot more to what happened here than what the DA's office has portrayed thus far. So, we look forward to getting all of our discovery that we are entitled to and putting forward a defense that will ultimately clear Megan of these allegations, cause that is all they are at this point." News 12 went to Marchena's home in Massapequa but one answered the door. News 12 also reached out to Tutor Time about the alleged assault but had not heard back as of Saturday night.
