While millions of Americans celebrated the United States' 2-0 victory over Australia in the World Cup, the win was extra special for one local uncle.
Trumbull's Tom Scally says his nephew Joe Scally made his World Cup debut during Friday's game.
"He plays in Germany for Monchengladbach and has been there for five years," Scally says. "He's a really good kid, and I'm really proud of him... very proud of him."
Scally, a defender on the United States Men's National team, checked into the game around the 80-minute mark.
His uncle says he's used to waking up early on Saturday mornings to watch his nephew play all the way in Germany.
Scally joined dozens of fans who watched the win at O'Neill's Irish Pub and Restaurant in Norwalk.
"Really cool, we're all happy that he played," Scally says. "Loved it. I don't know what to say... it's really cool though."
Family friend Carlo Valente, of Wilton, was also on hand to witness the emotional moment.
"Let's go, Joe!" Valente says. "Joe is an amazing kid, the family is amazing, and I'm really excited for them."
