Construction work in the Bronx is leaving some residents in the Kingsbridge Heights neighborhood sleepless, with loud jackhammering reported during late-night hours.
Jaritza Delacruz hasn't had a good night's sleep in more than a week due to the late-night construction on her Kingsbridge Heights block.
"I feel like I'm running on an empty tank at this point,” Delacruz said.
Delacruz lives on Van Cortlandt Park West and says the loud jackhammering begins every night around 10 p.m. and lasts until at least 2 a.m.
Delacruz said she has filed multiple complaints with 311.
"I reached out to DOT directly,” Delacruz explained. “Her response was that she didn't want to disrupt traffic."
On Wednesday, around midnight, things got even worse. Delacruz said crews brought out two jackhammers, one of them right across the street from the building where she lives, waking up her 1-year-old son.
"It's disruptive to him and then my husband wakes up at about four in the morning in order to get to work,” she said.
Other neighbors are fed up, too.
"I think it's outrageous.” Louis, another neighbor said. “They should do this at a time when everybody's at work and more appropriate hours for us to get some rest in the neighborhood."
Signs nearby the site say it's part of a project to improve pedestrian and cyclist access to Van Cortlandt Park.
Construction in NYC is restricted to 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Permits are required for work outside those hours.
News 12 reached out to the Department of Transportation for answers and it said it is looking into it.
