The New Jersey National Guard's free youth program kicked off this week.

The Youth Challenge Academy, which has been running since 1994, gives 16- to 18-year-olds a sense of military life through structure and discipline.

The aim is for graduates of the 22-week program to learn skills, values and self-discipline to succeed as adults.

A total of 61 teenagers began the program this week.
