Williamsbridge residents say they are shivering inside their homes after a water main break caused Con Edison to shut off the gas lines Wednesday, leaving people without heat. Dozens of Con Edison workers were on Burke Avenue and the surrounding area trying to fix the damage. "It's warmer outside than inside,” said Miles, a Williamsbridge resident. Buildings along Burke Avenue and the surrounding streets have gone without gas and heat for over 24 hours. "I have on about three shirts right now and two, like long johns and socks and stuff like that. And I got to wear this thing on my head,” said Nadia, a Williamsbridge resident. She says all of that clothing, plus a coat inside the house to stay warm is not enough. "Huddling up together because, you know, the space heater you know can only do so much it is really uncomfortable,” said Nadia. The Department of Environmental Protection has repaired the water main break but gas lines have to be shut off until all the water is pumped out. Con Edison says crews are working 24/7 until service is fully restored, but until then, customers are left to find other options. "I just ordered, like, a hot plate to see if...maybe I can help out with stuff because we got to be...get going out to get food,” said Nadia. Con Edison was not able to provide an exact day when the gas will be put back on and residents are worried the outage will last a while. "It's happened before about maybe two or three years ago. I think it lasted for like maybe two months. I hope this time it's not as long,” said Miles. Con Edison has sent texts out to customers saying they will be going door to door to begin to restore service and will have an outreach team on site.
