It is a jarring site in one Trumbull neighborhood: a burned-out home, missing a roof and surrounded by police tape. A squad car also sits outside the house on Hitching Post Lane for scene security as the Trumbull Fire Marshal’s Office investigates a weekend fire that killed one person and took crews over 2 ½ hours to get under control.
The victim’s name has not been released yet.
Four volunteer departments in Trumbull and Monroe responded to the home at 3:17 a.m. Saturday, according to the Long Hill Fire Department. Chief Greg Sanfanandre said about 30 firefighters and 10 trucks were on scene.
Crews found heavy fire conditions throughout “as well as significant structural compromise and collapse on the second floor,” according to the department. That forced firefighters to attack the flames from the outside at first, then once it was possible, move their efforts inside and search the home, the department said. That's when they found the victim.
A neighbor declined to go on camera but told News 12 one person lived there alone. A bouquet of flowers was left in the snow by the mailbox in their memory.
"Our thoughts and condolences are with resident's family and friends during this difficult time," said Sanfanandre in a statement. "We extend our appreciation to all first responders who worked tirelessly, battling very difficult conditions."
