In all 60 years of business at Volo Museum, a family-owned museum in Illinois known for its Hollywood movie car display, a speeding ticket from hundreds of miles away was never a thought - until now.
“So I'm sitting with the owner Brian Grams,” said Jim Wojdyla, marketing director of Volo Museuem, "and he opens the mail, and he's like, 'This is a new one.' I'm like, 'What's that?' He shows it to me, and I'm like, 'Oh, you got a speeding ticket?' He's like, 'No, look at the ticket.' I'm like, 'New York City?' He's like, 'That's not the weird part. Look at the car.'"
Traffic cameras captured KITT, the famous car from the popular "Knight Rider" show in the 1980s, speeding on Ocean Parkway.
The only problem, the show’s prop vehicle hasn’t moved from the museum in a decade, so a copycat car using the same plates is likely to blame.
“I'm like maybe it's a joke or something like that,” said Wojdyla. “So we looked it up on the official city of New York website, and it's a legit ticket. It’s just a novelty plate. We sell these in our gift shop.”
Not only has this KITT replica been caught speeding on Ocean Parkway recently, but records show the car has at least five other tickets in New York City, raising even more questions about how this ticket was sent to Illinois, and what else are drivers in the city are getting away with?
“I don't know if this is a new trend or what it is,” said Wojdyla. “I guess it's pretty serious. I mean, if this is registered to us, I've got to imagine that this isn't the first time this has happened.”
The Department of Transportation tells News 12 that this was a rare error and the ticket will be dismissed.
