Angry Sheepshead Bay residents are protesting a planned shelter located at 2134 Coyle St. These residents have set up tents in a protest encampment that has stretched into its second month.

The encampments are filled 24/7 with protestors calling for a reversal of the project to what was originally slated to be affordable housing, but is now slated to be a homeless shelter.

"Now you know we have no trust so, whatever they say, I don't want to hear it and go back to the original plan. No one would be out here if this was affordable housing," said resident Andy Wang.

As they fill up their generators, pass out food and chant at passing cars, protestors say they are here for the long haul, even if efforts to start the site begin with them just outside.

"They are going to do what they have to do, and we are going to do what we feel we have to do, for the safety here, for the children walking to school," Wang said.

A lawsuit was recently filed on behalf of the protestors against the development company for the site, looking to block a cease-and-desist order to shut the protestors down.

The location is set to be transitional housing for women and children and is expected to be complete by May 2027.
