A man was sentenced to 45 years in federal prison in connection to trafficking drugs out of a day care that killed a child and poisoned three other children.
Felix Herrera Garcia was sentenced by a federal judge on Wednesday in Manhattan. He previously pleaded guilty to trafficking drugs out of the Kingsbridge day care center.
The parents of Nicolas Feliz Dominici, the 1-year-old who died after he ingested fentanyl, gave emotional victim impact statements before the judge.
"I think every parent's nightmare is to lose a child especially this way," said Zoila Dominici, the mother of Nicolas.
Prosecutors say Herrera Garcia and his wife ran a full scale and long running narcotics distribution center out of the day care. In September 2023, thousands of dollars' worth of fentanyl was found stashed in trapped doors under the playmats that children napped on. Prosecutors say at least two pill presses and other drug packaging equipment were found in the closets of the day care.
Herrera Garcia addressed the court room and asked for forgiveness and apologized for his actions.
