The Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a new wave of scam text messages.

The sheriff’s office says the texts are pretending to be from the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission and are asking for personal information or money. They say that these texts may include links.

“These scammers are getting more sophisticated, but it’s important to remember that no legitimate DMV will ever ask for your personal information or payment through a text message,” Sheriff Fred Brown wrote in a statement. “We’re asking the public to be alert, report these messages, and never click suspicious links.”

Officials say one clue to look out for is that the scams often refer to the “DMV,” but New Jersey’s agency was officially renamed as the MVC.

“Any message referring to the outdated name should be treated as suspicious,” officials wrote.

Anyone who gets the scam texts should report the message to the Federal Trade Commission and/or the FBI. They should also report and block the phone number through their phone’s messaging app.
