The U.S. House of Representatives has passed legislation requiring all new vehicles sold nationwide to include AM radio.

The bill was introduced by Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. (D-NJ) in response to automakers removing AM radio from some new vehicles.

Pallone has argued that eliminating AM radio could limit public access to emergency information and alerts.

Supporters say AM radio remains an important tool for communicating with the public during emergencies.

The legislation now moves to the Senate for consideration.
