Police say a highway patrol officer was driving near Exit 34 when he spotted the animal.

An abandoned kitten was rescued from the middle of the Long Island Expressway on Friday afternoon.
Police say a highway patrol officer was driving near Exit 34 when he spotted the animal.
He then activated his emergency lights, stopped traffic and retrieved the kitten.
Officials say the kitten was unharmed and taken to the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter for assessment.
