Over 1,000 people are expected to be at Town Park Point Lookout for Hempstead Town's annual 9/11 memorial service. This is the largest ceremony on Long Island each year.
The event takes place at sunrise on the shores of Point Lookout, where stunned Long Islanders gathered 24 years ago as they watched smoke rise up from Lower Manhattan above the Atlantic Ocean.
The event will include words from multiple spiritual leaders and the Kellenberg Memorial High School Gregorian Consortium will provide music throughout.
Retired FDNY Chief Steve Marsar, a 9/11 first responder who has dedicated his career to providing mental health services to firefighters across the state, including many who were at Ground Zero, will deliver the keynote address.
The town's permanent 9/11 memorial will showcase two bright blue beams of light throughout the early morning and include a patriotic sand sculpture on display.
More than 500 Long Islanders were killed on 9/11, countless others have passed since from 9/11-related illnesses and many more continue to feel the effects of being at Ground Zero to this day.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m.
