Good morning everyone. Today does mark 24 years since the deadliest terror attack in US history. People across the nation and right here in the Hudson Valley will be remembering the lives lost on 9/11. News Twelve's Lisa LaRocca is at Westchester's Memorial, the Rising at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla this morning talking about why this is such a special place here locally, Lisa. And you know, one of the reasons it's such such a special place, and I'm here with Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins and thanks so much for being with us. I've always said it was so wonderful the way the county handled this because they really kind of let the victims' families run with it. They chose the spot, they chose the design, uh, and I think that's a big part of what makes this area so special. Well, it does make this area so special for the remembrance ceremonies and for all the families and certainly there's so many people that didn't get remains back so they this is where they come to, um, but again it's all of the families working together and then the, the county and all of the people that had contributed to make sure that we were able to build um the the rising and to continue to do that and now with the addition of the 9/11. Um, related illnesses for our first responders here, um, you know, it is, um, an unfortunate, um, but something that we have to continue to make sure that we're remembering everyone, so it's fantastic from that perspective and it's a good opportunity for us to take a step back and be able to, um, get back that feeling of how we were all so um together um on 9/11 in 2000. And one and then there's people that have not had those experiences because they weren't born yet right right and and they they were younger and they didn't understand and we have to continue to educate people to do that and that's why it's so very important. Absolutely and I, I mean sadly I remember when it was first opened, the 9/11 responders and you know there were the four stones and I said thought gee, why, why do we have all those stones we said. Because they're gonna be adding every year, I thought, wow, and now there are 88 names. There were more names added this year and and then that and you had a vigil last night. Today at 3 o'clock you have the annual ceremony. Talk a little bit about that. Yeah, I mean it it is important and and we split up the things so we had last night on September 10th the interfaith prayer service, um, because, um, we wanna make sure to give people the opportunities so for those people that um want support through. Their faith, um, or have, or no faith at all that we wanna be able to cer certainly celebrate and recognize the family members and we talked about the seven names that were added, um, just recently, um, to, to the stones from the 9/11 related illnesses and that doesn't count those individuals that were working down there and and that's another thing, um, that we're trying to, to make sure that we're recognizing that but we have our volunteer in New York coordination with the day of service so everyone can. Feel a way to give back so some people just come here in quiet dignity and be able to recognize family members and friends that they knew, um, but in addition to that, um, be able to give back to the community and we have so many things going on with volunteer New York today. All right, thank you so much, County Executive Ken Jenkins for being with us. 3 o'clock today is the memorial service. Public is welcome to come. We're in Valhalla, Westchester County. Let's go back to the studio. We have to heal, we have to continue to pray. We have to continue to support one another. And you just heard the county executive talking about this with Lisa LaRocca, that special prayer vigil at the same location in Valhalla yesterday. Westchester County honored the memory of those who have passed away from 9/11 related illnesses. Those seven more names were added to the memorial, including Edmund Colley Junior. His family tells us he developed a rare form of cancer more than 10 years after 9/11 after working at Ground Zero for ConEd. He went down to the towers after to shut off all the gas down in the lower Manhattan. He saw things that nobody should have to see, wanted him to be recognized, you know, for what he went through, and I think he would be proud to see his name there yeah. Now he passed away in 2023. This touching event honors the memories of the fallen. There are several more 9/11 memorials across the Hudson Valley today in Rockman County. A ceremony will take place at Havasto Bay Park in New Rochelle. The fire department is holding its ceremony to remember the victims of 9/11 and in Orange County, there's a service at Thomas Boll Memorial Park at 6 p.m.
