Harlem Week is back, celebrating its 50th anniversary, with a packed schedule that highlights everything from the arts to health resources and job opportunities for the community.
"The theme this year is 'Celebrate the Journey,'" said Marko Nobles, second vice chairman of Harlem Week.
This annual event’s journey began in 1974, celebrating Harlem’s rich history and culture. This year’s festivities are planned through Aug. 18.
"It started as a one-day event. It was really meant to infuse pride in the community for those who lived here. At the time, Harlem wasn’t in the state that it is now, so it was really about the community feeling better about itself," Nobles explained.
Many of the signature events will take place on West 135th Street.
"Your health village will be here, the children's festival at the end of this street. All throughout these blocks you’ll have vendors and exhibitors selling different wares and doing different giveaways," Nobles added.
Nobles promises there’s something for everyone to enjoy, and you don’t have to be from Harlem to join in on the fun.
"We say Harlem is a state of mind, so one, everybody is welcomed, and two, we find that everybody has roots in Harlem somewhere," Nobles said. "Remember, if you can’t join us in person, you can join us online at harlemweek.com and watch everything that’s going on, but we want you to join us in person and celebrate the journey."
