Gun scanning metal detectors are set to be installed at New York City subway stations today and tomorrow.

Mayor Eric Adams said the detectors will be rolled out at select turnstiles as part of a pilot program with the company Evolv Technology.

The scanners use artificial intelligence technology to pinpoint concealed weapons on a person as they swipe into the subway system.

"Eventually, every turnstile is going to be able to identify if someone is carrying a gun. I think it's a game changer for the transportation system across the globe," says Mayor Adams.

Adams says there has been several thousand tests done, and believes this will become the new norm at stations across the city.

The mayor's office did not say which stations the scanners will be deployed in.
