A Greenburgh man is calling on officials to step up flood mitigation efforts after he said his house flooded while he was away this week.
Dave Surace said he was away on vacation when heavy rain rolled through Westchester on Monday.
He said he asked family and neighbors to check on his house on Hunter Road because flooding has been an ongoing issue there.
"They got a pump going out the front, but I was watching it on camera and the water just kept coming up from the street and the rain itself," Surace said.
Surace said he was forced to make a tough call when water started pooling in front of his garage.
"I was having a panic attack and I had to leave my wife and 6- and 8-year-old[s] alone, on vacation, with no car for two days now," Surace said.
Instead of relaxing, Surace said he's spent the last two days stressed and cleaning up.
"I've been crying about how much stuff I've lost. My kids yearbooks, pictures, pre-school, all of the notes that they wrote me," Surace said.
Surace nicknamed a water source next to house as "Dave's Nightmare Creek" because he believes it's the reason for all the flooding at his home.
Town Supervisor Paul Feiner said the town has spent a significant amount of money doing work on the street and has asked the engineer and commissioner to look at the property.
In the meantime, Surace said he's doing as much cleanup as he can before he has to get back to his family on vacation.
"The whole point of vacation is to relax and get your mind off of everything," Surace said. "But, the stress is still going to be here when I come home."
The family has created a GoFundMe to help deal with the damage.
