Gov. Ned Lamont signed a new law Monday morning that places major restrictions on how federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents can operate in Connecticut.

Under the law, ICE agents can no longer arrest people in designated “protected spaces,” including playgrounds and churches. Agents are also prohibited from wearing masks, and state authorities are now permitted to investigate actions taken by federal agents. Agents who violate the new rules can face lawsuits.

Republican lawmakers argued the measure is unenforceable against federal authorities and unconstitutional.
