Tax season is stressful enough, and now scammers are making it worse. Gov. Kathy Hochul is warning New Yorkers about fake messages claiming to come from the state tax department. Scammers are reaching out through calls, texts, emails and even letters - all designed to trick taxpayers into giving away personal information or money. Officials say the state already has the information it needs, and eligible New Yorkers do not need to do anything to receive their inflation refund checks. Residents tell News 12 they’ve seen these messages, but many say their advice is simple: Block them, delete them and don’t waste your time. State leaders add that scammers are often targeting the most vulnerable, like seniors and people who may not be tech savvy.
