Fairfield Republicans believe they've collected enough signatures to force a special election for the town's first selectman position.
Democrat Christine Vitale was recently appointed after the death of Bill Gerber.
The town charter allows for a special election if signatures are gathered from at least 5% of registered voters.
The Republican Town Committee says it "far exceeded" that goal and has now turned in the petition for certification.
