Emergency crews are responding to a freight train derailment involving a spill near Tonnelle Avenue in North Bergen, authorities said.
The incident occurred at around 3:16 p.m. near 2425 Tonnelle Ave., with 13 cars derailing, according to CSX. Officials said one of the derailed cars released a substance identified as ethyl acetate.
"Our Hazmat teams are currently working to safely mitigate the situation by diluting it with large amounts of water," North Bergen Mayor Nick Sacco wrote in a statement.
North Bergen police and firefighters are on scene, along with Jersey City Hazmat teams, police said.
Officials said no injuries have been reported and there is no confirmed danger to the public.
The derailment has caused significant traffic disruptions. Route 3 is closed in both directions near Tonnelle Avenue, while Tonnelle Avenue itself remains open in both directions, authorities said.
Emergency medical services units are also responding as crews continue to assess the situation.
