A shooting inside the Freehold Library remains under investigation by Freehold police and the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
Witnesses told News 12 that the victim was shot inside the library around 4 p.m. Thursday. The victim was rushed to the hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to the head, according to witnesses.
The library was closed Friday. A sign on the front door said it would remain closed until Monday.
The shooting happened during a busy time in downtown Freehold, when people and students were in the area after school. Police responded quickly and began helping the victim before the person was taken away by ambulance.
Surveillance cameras were visible on the side of the building and near the rear door of the library. Those cameras may help investigators as they work to identify the shooter.
Authorities have not released the victim’s name or condition. They also have not released information about a possible suspect.
