A free jazz concert for Bridgeport seniors will take place next Thursday, June 20, at the Bijou Theatre.
The Jazz Society of Fairfield County will host the event and its members will perform.
The nonprofit offers free or low-cost concerts featuring accomplished artists. They additionally provide outreach, educational and performance opportunities to students, amateurs and emerging professional musicians.
Since 2015, they have hosted a weekly jazz club, 'Jazz at the Post' in Westport.
The opening act, the Keynote Jazz Band, held a special rehearsal Friday in preparation.
The ensemble is an intergenerational group featuring Bridgeport high school students, alumni and community members.
It's associated with KEYS', a nonprofit that provides free music lessons and performance opportunities to under-resourced students in Bridgeport.
During the concert, they will perform music from the 1930s and 1940s.
Two of Keynote's performers tell News 12 they are looking forward to sharing their love of music with the seniors.
"I'm super excited to bring music to senior citizens. I always wanted to share music. You know music education is really important in the community," says Liana Nash, a pianist and signer.
"Jazz is never the same, it always changes. It's one genre of music that doesn't have consistency. it's very different in many ways whether its the way that it's written or played by different bands," says Johnny Moore, a drummer.
Tickets are required. Seniors can obtain them at any of the city's senior centers.
People can also contact Marie Heller, the program director of the city's Department of Aging, via email at marie.heller@bridgeportct.gov or call 203 576-7993.
