The first flakes haven’t fallen, but travelers at LaGuardia Airport are already feeling the impact of an approaching blizzard expected to dump up to 20 inches of snow across the five boroughs.
More than 60 flights were delayed and at least seven were canceled Saturday, according to FlightAware, leaving crowds of anxious passengers scanning departure boards and scrambling for alternatives.
At JFK Airport, there were 199 delays and 10 cancellations.
At Terminal A at LaGuardia, the mood was tense even as planes continued to take off under clear skies.
“Yeah, we found out just now it’s canceled,” said Donnelly, who was traveling for work from Texas. They had planned to stay the weekend in New York for a conference but bought an earlier flight to dodge the weather. When they arrived, that flight had also been canceled.
“We’re running over to JFK to try to catch the next one. We had to move our trip up to get out and not get stuck."
Others worried the storm could disrupt their return flights later in the week.
“I was already delayed coming here,” said Morgan, who flew in from Florida. “My flights on Wednesday, but with how it’s been, I don’t know.”
Despite sunshine and unusually mild temperatures Saturday, the growing list of delays and cancellations signaled the start of what could become a chaotic travel stretch as the storm approaches.
