A fire damaged two hair salons in Chatham early Wednesday morning, but no injuries were reported.

The fire broke out around 4:30 a.m. at a commercial building on South Passaic Avenue, according to borough officials.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire at the rear of the building.

Officials said the structure houses two separate businesses, Chatham Hair Stylists and 201 Salon.

No one was inside the businesses at the time of the fire.

Firefighters from Chatham and surrounding communities responded and were able to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby apartments and businesses.

Officials said the calm weather helped keep the fire from extending to neighboring buildings.

The heaviest damage appeared to be in the rear parking lot area of the property.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by local and county fire marshals.
