In the 1880s, history was made on a baseball diamond in Babylon.
The first all-Black fully salaried baseball team, called the Cuban Giants, was formed in 1885.
“The people loved them, they loved to see athletic people play, they actually played against white teams and beat most of them," said Baseball historian Tom Fesolowhich.
The baseball players were also waiters at the Argyle Hotel that once stood on Argyle Lake in Babylon.
“Frank Thompson was the head waiter, and it seems he put together this gentleman who would help guests, served in the dining room, and were also baseball players," says Babylon Town Historian Mary Cascone.
It was a homerun for the Argyle Hotel that would only stand 22 years before being demolished.
The Cuban Giants left Babylon after a few years of playing in the village, but served as a model for future teams.
The Suffolk Historical Society will be putting a historical marker in for the 140th anniversary of the Cuban Giants.
