Fire officials are urging residents to follow electrical safety precautions in the aftermath of Friday's fatal apartment building fire in New Rochelle.
Authorities say 47-year-old Maria Arreola and her 26-year-old son, Andrew Salomon, died in the fire at 30 Eastchester Road. Two firefighters were also injured and three families were displaced.
New Rochelle Fire Department Chief Andrew Sandor says he hopes to never see a deadly fire like the one Friday again. On Saturday, he shared some advice on how families can stay safe during the current hot summer months and beyond.
Sandor advises not to plug major appliances into extension cords or power strips. If someone has a three-prong plug, he does not recommend cutting the third prong to make it fit into a two-prong outlet.
Instead, Sandor recommends plugging major appliances like refrigerators, washers and dryers and air conditioners directly into wall outlets.
He also recommended residents not to staple extension cords and run them around the doorway or running extension cords under carpets or through walls.
Sandor also warned against overloading extension cords, which investigators believe was the cause of Friday's fire.
The city's building department has determined that a total of four apartments in the building are unfit for occupancy. There was still no official word as of Saturday night on when anyone will be able to live in those units again.
