September, if you didn't know is Hunger Action Month and today is National Food Bank Day. And sadly, hunger is a very real problem right here in the Hudson Valley this morning and release of the Rock is joining us live with our friends that Feeding Westchester in s for to talk all about what we can do to help and least if you can't bring a can good, you could still, you know, we orange to help support. That's right today, they're, they're uh really kind of uh stressing folks wear orange uh throughout uh the month of September tonight, the bridge is going to be lit up in orange to kind of kick off uh Hunger Action Month. And if you are interested in taking action, there's plenty of things to do here at Feeding Westchester. Let me introduce you to uh Josh Allante. He's with volunteer services. Thanks for coming in this morning. We're in the brand new sorting room. It is double the size of the one that we were in last year at this time. Talk about it. You gotta love this. Definitely. So, um before the pandemic, we were distributing about 10 million pounds of food. Um the in the height of the pandemic, that number skyrocketed to 20 million pounds. So you gotta think about the output. If we double um our capacity and with the twice as big sorting room, then we can double our output in Westchester County. Um And we thank all of our volunteers for coming by and really helping us with all of our output and all of our distribution. They do so much for the mission volunteer is a huge, huge part of feeding Westchester, for example. I mean, this is, this is some of the kind of stuff that you guys do, talk a little bit about that for people who are at home. For sure. So this is a remote volunteer opportunity for anyone who wants to volunteer. Um in person, you can go to our website feed westchester.org/get involved. Um This is a remote volunteer opportunity. Part of our help from home program, we have breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack items and essentially you can buy these items in bulk, um assemble them remotely. Uh We've had teams from, you know, scout troops all the way to the most respected corporate groups huddled around the table. Um Literally packing these bags. You can donate them here at our facility five days a week from Monday through Friday. Um And it's, it goes such a long way. Each one of these bags goes such a long way in the community, especially now that kids are back in school and, uh, you know, everybody needs help, Josh, thanks so much. And again, you know, we'll be talking about this throughout the morning. So, uh how you can get involved. There's so many different ways and it's such a great uh organization to get involved with. We are in Elmsford and Feeding Westchester. Let's go back to the studio, Jack.

September is Hunger Action Month and today is actually National Food Bank Day if you didn't know. And sadly, hunger, it's a very real problem right here at home in the Hudson Valley. And this morning, at least the Rock she joins us with, our friends are Feeding Westchester this morning in s for to talk more about what we can all do to help out. Yeah. Hey Jen, you know, there's so many things you can do to help out here at Feeding Westchester and they need volunteers. And uh it's really just for such a great cause let me introduce you to Martine Campoli. She's the director of individual giving. And you know, you and I have been talking and it's, people are always so surprised when they hear that statistic. One in three households in Westchester County, you'd never one of the most affluent in the country is in danger of hunger and you kind of, you know, had an epiphany moment. Yeah. So I'm a Westchester resident, born and raised in Austin. There were children's feeding programs running out of my high school. I had no idea what the need was till I started working here. But I'm a new mom now. I have a nine month old at home, my sweet Adeline and um, it was really a new perspective for me, a, a shift in my understanding of hunger because I was at a mobile food pantry distribution. And there was this mother with a little boy who was crying and crying in a stroller and she'd been sitting on the line probably for about an hour and people were trying to make the little boy smile. We were giving him water. It was a hot day in late May and she nothing was making him feel better. And I, my heart was ripping it too because I knew the decision she was probably making was do I go home, change the diaper, put him down for a nap or do I stay online a little bit longer for food for my family? So it's, it's a tough, tough decision that a lot of families have to make just to make their cost balance out each month. And, and you know, a lot of these folks who need that extra, we'll tell you about, you know, seniors, people who serve their country and people who are working two jobs. So you know, it's, you don't think about that with Westchester. So you help uh kind of bring people in to donate. Yes. So there are so many ways you can get involved and support our cause. This is an expensive operation to run. We're actually in the middle of a 24 phase expansion, two phases in. Um So we're standing in our new conference room over here, which we're very excited about. Thank you. Uh But it's, it's an expensive operation to run. So donations of any kind, uh credit card donations online. I work with uh people who support us through stock gifts or DFS or even leaving us as a beneficiary in their will or estate planning, um, students who do fundraisers for us. So, we've got a $60,000 forklift. We're trying to raise money for right now. The floors are, um, you know, a lot of wear and tear and that's another $200,000 cost. It all helps.
